What is nocturnal clitoral tumescence?

Nocturnal clitoral tumescence, also known as nocturnal clitoral erections or NCT, is the occurrence of spontaneous erections of the clitoris during non-REM sleep. It is a normal physiological response that occurs in females similar to the occurrence of penile erections in males during sleep.

The exact cause of NCT is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to increased blood flow to the genital area during sleep. NCT is not related to sexual arousal or dreams, as it can occur even in the absence of such stimuli.

Studies have shown that NCT is more frequent during the early stages of sleep, and in younger women. It has also been found to be present in women with various types of sexual dysfunction. However, it is not a reliable sign of sexual functioning or dysfunction.

NCT can be measured using a variety of techniques, including ultrasound and plethysmography. It is considered a useful tool in the study of female sexual response and dysfunction.
